With presidential election 2008 fast approaching and candidates working hard to woo voters, Res Ipsa asked a diverse group of California Western professors to weigh in on some of the most critical issues in the campaign. Highlights include:

COVER STORY:
Will the Election Bring Major Change?
Voter interest in November's presidential election remains high, despite the fact the public has been exposed to candidates through an extended campaign season, with many more months to go. Why? While the topics may sound familiar, much has changed in four years. In 2004, the Iraq war was in its early stages, "subprime" was an obscure term, and the realities of illegal immigration had not neared the tipping point. Today voters have a chance to vote for a viable female, African-American, or Vietnam vet. California Western professors weigh in on the issues.

SIDEBAR: The Election and the Environment
California Western Professor Richard Finkmoore’s new book titled Environmental Law and the Values of Nature, coming out this summer, presents modern U.S. environmental law with a strong emphasis on natural resources, such as biological diversity, water, forests, and federal public lands. It addresses energy issues and the most critical issue of all - climate change. Res Ispa asked Finkmoore about environmental issues in the election.

STORY: Lean On Me
An innovative loan repayment program at California Western provides debt relief for young lawyers committed to representing underserved clients in the public sector. Eligible applicants for the program must have more than $50,000 in law school debt and be pursuing public sector careers. In this feature story, Adrianne Baker Fellowship recipients Nick Falcone '04, Corrie Arellano ’03, and Laura Pennelle ’06 discuss their public interest work.

ALUMNI PROFILE: Kevin O'Neil '05
Two years after receiving his LL.M. in Trial Advocacy from California Western, Commander Kevin O'Neil's career as a military judge for the Western Judicial Circuit of the Navy's JAG Corps is thriving. Since his certification last May, O'Neil has heard several San Diego courts-martial, brought pursuant to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the Rules for Courts-Martial.

FACULTY PROFILE: Michal Belknap
Across the country there are great law school professors and there are outstanding historians, but rarely are both talents found in one person. California Western is fortunate that for the past 21 years, Professor Michal Belknap has combined the two disciplines in a way that makes him the archetypal professor in the school’s drive for excellence in legal research.

FACULTY PROFILE: Bryan Liang
Can a law school influence the nation's healthcare policies? Can it make hospitals safer for patients, expand minority access to healthcare, fight elder abuse, and help stop the import of dangerous fake drugs? It can if the law school is California Western and the man leading those efforts is Professor Bryan Liang, executive director of the Institute of Health Law Studies.
